e.l.f. Cosmetics has released a new satin lipstick in 10 shades, promising one-swipe pigmentation. With the variety of shades and the very affordable price point this lipstick looks very promising.
The Srsly satin lipstick line retails for $3 USD (before tax) for 5 mL of product. This is a wonderful price point for a lipstick. A drugstore brand such as Maybelline retails for around $8 for the same amount of product as the e.lf. lipstick. I ordered the shade Crème as I am a huge fan of pink light nudes. When I received this product I was excited to give this a try, but noticed right away that the color was a very pale nude, unlike what was showcased on the e.l.f website. The color Crème is very bright, and doesn’t suit my skin tone. In fact when I put it on, I felt that it washed me out. Perhaps if I layered it with another shade it would look better with my skin tone (NC15 for reference).
The formula of this lipstick is sheer and very smooth but has an extremely thin formula. Upon my first application I noticed that this lipstick drags on my lips, and requires several layers to be applied in order to achieve a pigmented look. In the swatch below I had to layer the lipstick 2-3 times to achieve the color payoff. Furthermore, this lipstick leans more towards a matte finish than a satin. Almost immediately the shade Crème began to settle into every dry patch, crack and line on my lips. It accentuated the dryness in my lips, and living in a very dry environment as I do, this lipstick did not look very flattering on me. In my opinion the packaging felt very inexpensive and for the price point had the lipstick performed to its’ claims that would not be an issue for me. As a last note in my opinion the scent is a bit unpleasant and smells like chemicals.
Final thoughts
Overall, although the price point is attractive, this lipstick did not work for me. I was very much looking forward to finding a formula that would suit the claims of “satin”, “pigmented” and “long lasting”, but this was not for me. I feel that e.l.f. cosmetics has many amazing products on the market that I enjoy thoroughly, but this didn’t do the trick for me.
